"My whole family got killed and then I lost my body up to my neck and now I live in a jar and then the world really ended this time so it's just me in my jar and the cockroaches." This made me laugh so hard. I have not laughed like this in a long time. I dont think im a tough crowd. I just think its hard to find a truly funny writer. Ive just read a dozen of your posts in july and now this one. Your a real gem. Honest, Heart-warmingly funny and unpredictable. Love this. I actually went through about a 4 month melt down last year over something that was pretty much an 8 on my Suck Scale and everyone around me kept saying it was "for the best" that what happened happened. Thank you so much for this reminder. I have been in a stupor of my own suck for the past few days, and I temporarily lost sight of the fact that I have suffered far worse suck before, and I will no doubt suck even more down the line. I have to admit I am guilty of this. When your house burns down when you are 8 months pregnant and then your face becomes paralyzed suddenly, it's hard to put others' situations in perspective. This is especially true when someone complains about losing one (significant) object. I know it's not fair of me so I keep my thoughts to myself, but it's hard when your scale of suck is so much more than theirs.

I went to Texas on vacation and lost my entire book of CD's. At least a 7 on the Suck Scale...no joke.

Great entry. It conveys that the notion of tolerance should be exercised more amongst the masses, something I wholeheartedly agree with. Sometimes people are going to freak out when it's not necessary, but who are we to judge how others should react to something they've never been through before?

I think that I was totally at a 9 1/2 when my first serious boyfriend dumped me in college after three years for some dumb, big-boobed, uber-blonde freshman. Oh, the waterworks! Oh, the meltdowns! Oh, how my life was over!

I look back on it now and can't help but get that "oh, God...what was I thinking?" feeling.

Oh. I definitely agree! I have this kinda friend who always, like ALWAYS, compare what she has gone through every time someone has a problem. She always tries to top it like, "I've been through worse." "Oh, that's nothing. What happened to me was..." I mean, WTF was up with that?

When it comes to sympathy for others in distress, too often we fail to realize that the worst thing you've ever been through is the worst thing you've ever been through. We turn our noses up when someone can't clear a hurdle we've been over a million times on the first try. We forget how hard it was the first time we had to jump it. When someone else flips out over something that doesn't even qualify for our own Suck Scale, we're almost repulsed. TOTALLY!!!

This is all so true. It's funny, I have gotten to a point in life where I have more sympathy for the lesser things, like the 20-yr-old getting dumped than, say an older friend getting divorced after 20 years of marriage. To me, I see it as feeling empathy for the weak, and irritation for people who should have known better. Glad you're back.
